so what is this? basically, it is the collected documentation of a strange phenomenon which periodically crosses my path — lone chairs in unusual places. some may see these photos and accuse me of placing these chairs simply to get an interesting shot, but i assure you that what you see is exactly the way that i found them. i never moved or touched any of the chairs shown in these photos; i have witnesses who can attest to that.

all of these chairs are interesting to me (and quite possibly only me), which was why i even bothered to document them in the first place. i wonder how they got to these places and how long they have been there. i wonder why these places were chosen and what the person who chose them was doing at the time. some of the chairs have their stories spelled out, while others take a bit of speculating. some were moved or destroyed shortly after i photographed them, while some are still there today. but all are in locations where one would not normally expect to find a chair, and that is what makes them special.

(i realize that only a handful of people will catch the reference, so i should note that the name and layout for this site were inspired by wire's second album, which is titled chairs missing and was originally released in 1978. it is also worth noting that they are still rocking to this day and have recently reissued their first three albums.)
